The Disability Uplift project is dedicated to advocating for, empowering, and supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Jinja and across the Eastern Region of Uganda. We firmly believe that every individual, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, has the right to live with dignity, access equal opportunities, and fully participate in community life. Our project addresses the unique challenges faced by PWDs, working towards their inclusion and well-being.

Our comprehensive approach to disability uplift includes:

Advocacy and Awareness: We actively campaign for the rights of PWDs, challenging societal stigmas and promoting a more inclusive understanding of disability. This involves public awareness campaigns, community dialogues, and engagement with local leaders and policymakers to ensure the implementation of disability-inclusive policies.
Assistive Devices Provision: We facilitate access to essential assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames, hearing aids, and white canes. These devices are crucial for enhancing mobility, independence, and the overall quality of life for PWDs, often provided through partnerships and donations.
Skills Training and Economic Empowerment: In collaboration with our Vocational Skilling project, we ensure that PWDs have equitable access to vocational training programs. We also explore specialized skill-building opportunities tailored to their abilities, aiming to equip them with marketable skills for sustainable livelihoods, entrepreneurship, and gainful employment. This includes adapted training methods and mentorship.
Inclusive Education Support: We work to break down barriers to education for PWDs, advocating for inclusive classrooms and providing support such as school supplies, adapted learning materials, and, where possible, scholarships or tuition assistance.
Community Integration and Support Groups: We foster the creation of support groups for PWDs and their caregivers, providing platforms for sharing experiences, mutual support, and collective advocacy. These groups help reduce isolation and build a strong sense of community.
Health and Rehabilitation Referrals: We connect PWDs with necessary health services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and specialized medical consultations, by providing referrals to relevant local healthcare facilities and organizations.

The Disability Uplift project strives to create a society where PWDs are not just cared for, but are active, respected, and contributing members of their communities. We have seen significant improvements in the mobility, confidence, and economic prospects of many individuals through our interventions, and we continue to work tirelessly towards a more equitable and accessible future for all.
